Hi. I am from Woodstock, NB, Canada. I am looking for an e-pal in Ireland to help me find my roots in Derry. My ancester John Kennedy was born in Derry approximately in 1810. He died in the Parish of Richmond, Carleton County, NB, Canada on April 30, 1897 at the age of 86. He came to Saint John, NB as a young man, probably as a stowaway.

My name is Tom Dempsey from Norwell, Massachusetts, USA. First my great, great grandfather, Maurice Joseph Dempsey, born in 1786 and my great, great grandmother, Bridget Redmond, born in 1795, came over from Wexford in 1819. We are not sure whether it was the county or the townland that they were born. All we know is that in the land court in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada when a piece of land was being purchased him that it was stated on the transaction that my gg-grandfather was from Wexford. I don't know what port they left from when they came over or what port they came into in Canada? Also don't the name of the ship they came over on? If I had that I would be able to look at the passenger list. We assumed our relatives left the port of Wexford and came directly into the port of Bathurst. However, on our way back from Bathurst last summer we stopped in the town of Chatham (Miramichi, N.B) We were told that we might be able to check out some passenger lists at St. Michael’s church of ships coming over from Ireland. The only information they had on my gg-grandparents was that they had a child, named William, baptized in St. Peter and Paul's church in Bartibog (across the bay from Miramichi). We went to that church and obtained a baptismal copy of William which showed he was born on November 24, 1819 (doesn’t state where) and baptized February 27, 1820.
The Godfather of William was Gregory Novel (this fellow also applied for the grant of land with my gg-grandfather. The Godmother was Bridgett Dunn. Originally we thought they came over in 1820. The birth of this son puts their arrival into Canada at least back to 1819. He could have been born on board ship or in Miramichi. They certainly didn’t come down from Bathurst, a hundred miles away, to have the baby baptized. Or they may have come into Saint John, NB and then traveled up to
Miramichi and stopped there to have the baby baptized, although they waited there three months for the missionary priest to come down from Bathurst for the baptism. Incidentally the missionary priest was Father Thomas Cooke who later served as pastor at Holy Family Parish in Bathurst where my gg-grandparents became parishioners. So Father Cooke may have influenced his coming up to Bathurst. The following is a list of my first generation family in Canada: Maurice J. Dempsey and Bridget Redmond had the following children: 1. Ann Dempsey, birth date unknown
2. Bridget Dempsey, birth date unknown
3. William, born in 1819.
4. Mary Dempsey, born 1820
5. Catherine Dempsey, born in 1821. Married John Saulter
6. John Dempsey, birth date unknown. Married Elizabeth Crowley
7. Hugh Dempsey, born in 1824. Married Mary E. Connor
8. Malcolm Dempsey, born in 1825. Married Maria Rodgers.
She passed away and he married Catherine Leary
9. James Dempsey, born in 1826. No record of marriage
10. William Dempsey, born in 1827. Married Johanna Casey
in 1834.
11. Maurice Joseph Dempsey, Jr., born 1828. Married Mary E.
English, born in Ct Antrim, Aghalee, Ireland, 8/14/1834.`
12. Elizabeth Dempsey, born July 11, 1830. No record of marriage. If anyone can identify with anyone of my relatives in this presentation I would be most appreciate hearing from you. Most sincerely, Thomas H. Dempsey, Jr.

My gr.gr.grandfather Anthony Dempsey and his wife Letitia also came from Wexford to the Miramichi area in June 1825.They also had a son baptized in ST.Peter and Paul church in Bartibogue(Anthony Dempsey)in 1826.Their oldest son John was sent from the Miramichi in 1826 to purchase land in Armstrong Brook area of Chaleur Bay.After John purchased the land the rest of their family settled on the land in 1826.Anthony died in 1833 from the fall of a tree and Letitia continued to raise the family in the Bay Chaleur area.Gus Dempsey
