Terry Lynch - 09:11am May 8, 2006 Irish (#44 of 59)

LYNCH JAMES (Born Circa 1799/1807) from Gort, County Galway. Departed Ireland sailing to Australia from Deptford England. Departed Deptford on ship ‘Neptune’, 1st October 1843, then from Cork 26th October 1843, arriving Sydney 11th February 1844. Wife Elleanor Hymes Lynch, nee CARRIGG and two children James Joseph aged 3 & William Joseph aged 1 accompanied him. Irish born children baptised by Rev. Michael O’Shaughnefay of Beaugh, County of Galway. James 3/7/1840 and William 7/5/1842.

  • * * Also accompanying James was, Anne GUINEA, age 23 and Johanna DUNLEAY age 24 and they were under James protection.

Seeking information on: JAMES LYNCH aged 36 (farm labourer) at time of departure and ELLEN LYNCH aged 33 (farm servant) at departure time. Although other information states they were older ages when married, James 39 and Ellen 35. So either the 2 sons were born prior to marriage or the parental ages need clarifying. James born COUNTY CLARE and Ellen born COUNTY GALWAY. 5 Australian born children: Edward Joseph, Andrew Joseph, Michael Joseph and Patrick Joseph. One male child deceased.

Also on James father MICHAEL LYNCH. (possible birth date 1770/1775 or near this period? He may have been 25 or 30 when James was born –IF James was first child?) James age query is: 36 at time of departure in 1843 making him born in 1807 but died at Gundagai in 1871 at age 72, so possibly born 1799/1800.

Additional information: James parents were MICHAEL LYNCH (a blacksmith) and CATHERINE –nee O’BRIEN. Presumably of Gort but maybe somewhere nearby in County Clare? One known sibling of James is Patrick –I have further info available here. Ireland and Australia –2 marriages.

Ellen’s parents were John and Bridget (nee Hynes) CARRIGG/CARRIG (or possibly GARRIGAN?). They possibly already had a son in Gundagai, NSW Australia; as James and Ellen brought with them in their care the 2 females mentioned above. James was “engaged” or sponsored by the Gundagai person to Australia. He was a brother-in-law and was single –so a brother to Ellen could be that person?

Terry Lynch. Adelaide. South Australia. 2nd May 2006.

#2. Seeking information on MICHAEL LYNCH. (possible birth date 1770/1775 or near this period?) Michael, a blacksmith married CATHERINE –nee O’BRIEN. He may have been 25 or 30 when a son, James was born –IF James was first child? Presumably Michael and Catherine were near Gort or nearby in County Clare/Galway? (James age query is: 36 at time of departure to Australia in 1843 making him born in 1807, but died at Gundagai NSW Australia in 1871 at age 72. So possibly son James was born 1799/1800/1807?) Another known sibling to James is Patrick –I have further info available here. Ireland and Australia –2 marriages.

Terry Lynch. Adelaide. South Australia. 7th May 2006.
